In the framework of its training events dedicated to the Italian astronomical community, the Italian node of the European ALMA Regional Centre (IT ARC node) organizes a
Tutorial on the CARTA viewer
by Marcella Massardi
May 8th 2026, h. 10.00
The event can be followed in presence at INAF-IRA (Bologna) 4th floor seminar room upon registration (see below), and remotely at meet.google.com/sue-bwvk-axf
Rationale
The Cube Analysis and Rendering Tool for Astronomy (CARTA), is a next-generation image visualization and analysis tool designed for ALMA, VLA, and SKA pathfinders, but can be used also for fits files generated by any other instruments like ATCA or JWST.
It uses a client-server architecture, making it ideal for rendering massive images quickly while providing advanced analysis tools like spectral line cube analysis and profile fitting.
CARTA is available for download at https://cartavis.org/ or accessible for use on ALMA data interactively (in a limited configuration) through the ALMA Science Archive (https://almascience.eso.org/aq/) .
During the event we will present the main capabilities and features of the tool and show its application on real data.
Participants are invited to bring their own laptops and try to follow the hands-on tutorial.
Support will be immediately provided to people in presence, while remote support will be given on a best effort.
This activity is part of the support that anybody can request from the Italian ARC node via e-mail to help-desk@alma.inaf.it, or through the ALMA help-desk.
For information on all ALMA-related matters and other Italian ARC events see our webpage at https://arc.ira.inaf.it/
